Financial Overview

UJ achieved positive operating results during the year under review, despite a tough economic environment. Strict budgetary controls, pressures from inadequate student funding, uncertainty around tuition fees, rising salary costs driven by scarcity and high demand for qualified academic and professional staff, rising utility costs, and the socioeconomic circumstances of the University’s students were some of the factors affecting the financial results for the year.

Faculty Highlights

This CBE report reflects the counter-disruptive strategy of its School of Accounting (SoA), the Johannesburg Business School (JBS), the School of Consumer Intelligence and Information Systems (SCiiS), the School of Economics (SoE), the School of Public Management,  Governance and Public Policy (SPMGPP), the School of Tourism and Hospitality (STH), and the academic governance force directed by the Deanery.

The 2018 year saw an increased research output, increased postgraduate enrolment (particularly at doctoral level), a growth in international linkages and collaborations, a positive student experience and an increasingly enhanced public profile.

The Faculty of Education offers academic programmes SWC) and APK, while the Centre for Education Rights and Transformation (CERT) is situated in the research village APB. In 2018, the Faculty worked on implementing the strategic plans of centres, departments and chairs.

UJ’s Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE) offers Engineering Science, Technology and the Postgraduate School of Engineering Management academic programmes, across APK, APB and DFC. There are 12 academic departments, one postgraduate school, six research centres, two technology stations and one institute.

Promoting a culture of technology transfer, attracting outstanding academics and eminent visiting professors and researchers, increasing its levels of external funding, and attracting outstanding students have enabled the Faculty to enhance its excellence in research and innovation.

In 2018 the Faculty of Humanities engaged extensively in 4IR public discussion through op-eds, talks, debates and formal research. We made excellent progress towards a single BA in place of the more than 10 current fixed-purpose programmes, and the rationalisation of assessments.

While the Faculty of Law is relatively small at UJ, when the number of non-law students registered for service modules offered by the Faculty is taken into account, it is one of the largest law schools or faculties at residential universities. QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018 ranked it at number five out of 17 in South Africa and at six on the continent.

In 2018 the Faculty of Science made a substantial contribution to UJ’s global scientific, research and reputational impact.
