Stakeholder Engagement

UJ faculties and divisions play an important role in stakeholder engagement, which impacts on our reputation, both nationally and internationally.

During 2018, the UJ Management Executive Committee enhanced stakeholder engagement through the renamed Division of University Relations, now comprising Strategic Communications, Marketing and Brand Management, UJFM, Government and Stakeholder Relations, and Community Engagement, all reporting to the Senior Executive Director in the Vice-Chancellor’s Office. The Alumni Office and Student Marketing have been relocated to the Division for Central Academic Administration within the Registrar’s Portfolio, which brings together all units associated with the student life cycle. Events Management has been relocated to Corporate Governance, within the Registrar’s Portfolio. Finally, Fundraising and Development now reports to the Chief Financial Officer.

STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS

Strategic Communications built a sound relationship with media and daily interaction bore fruit with over 444 academics and University representatives sharing insights. In 2018 Strategic Communications generated a total of 27 594 press clippings − largely opportunity-based brand image contributions (93%). A monthly digital student newsletter was launched in 2018, and weekly Vice Chancellor (VC) note/video messages, campus TV screens, and improved two way communication with students, staff and parents

MARKETING AND BRAND

With a shift in strategic focus UJ’s GES 4.0 vision was launched in May 2018 with ‘The future is coming; we’ve pre-imagined it. 4.0 will change the world and we’re on it’. The Creating Tomorrow Marketing Campaign was rolled out on new and traditional media platforms, including all social media platforms, various digital media spaces and on billboards, newspapers, radio, television and magazines – nationally and internationally.

UJFM – UJ’S CAMPUS RADIO STATION

UJFM executed its mandate in promoting the new institutional vision of global excellence and stature (GES) 4.0 as well as Pan-African thought and conversation, through quality, relevant and thought-provoking programming informed by UJ’s institutional values, vision and strategic objectives. In terms of third-stream income, a total amount of R1.2 million was generated in 2018 through diverse revenue streams.

GOVERNMENT AND STAKEHOLDER RELATIONS

During the year under review, Government and Stakeholder Relations made progress towards implementing the University’s global excellence and stature vision through focused relations with government and other key stakeholders. Agreements and partnerships were refined and delineated into the following focus areas: local government and agencies; provincial government and national government; and parastatals (stateowned enterprises). This delineation model produced positive results, as the team members were able to focus on their respective government areas.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Community engagement (CE) is the third core function of the University, alongside teaching and learning, and research. and is operational on the four campuses. CE in teaching is reflected as service learning (SL), with 131 programmes, and non-academically, in 320 organised outreach (OO) projects.

INSTITUTIONAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVES

In 2018, the CE Unit successfully executed International Mandela Day, National Women’s Day, UJ Student Volunteer Programme, Imbizo Awards for Student Volunteer Champions, CE Showcase Seminar, CE Roadshow, Community Engagement Recognition Awards (CERA), Community-based organisations (CBOs), forums and capacity building, UJ@13 round-table engagements with communitybased organisations (CBOs).

STUDENT VOLUNTEER CHAMPION (VC) PROGRAMME

The UJ Student Volunteer Champion Programme, is multi-disciplinary, inter-faculty and transformational in engaging with the higher education institution (HEI) priorities, the Global Sustainable Development Goals, the National Development Plan (NDP) and the City of Johannesburg Independent Development Plan (IDP) as well as the Nelson Mandela Foundation Pillars. CE successfully initiated the institutional Student Volunteer Champion Programme in 2018, aimed at promoting awareness of global responsible citizenship and the Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Unit had 18 457 student volunteers who registered for the weekly organised outreach projects, spread across all four campuses and drawn from all faculties. The Imbizo Awards for student volunteer champions saw the 200 top student volunteer champions honoured.
