Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE)

UJ’s Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE) offers Engineering Science, Technology and the Postgraduate School of Engineering Management academic programmes, across APK, APB and DFC. There are 12 academic departments, one postgraduate school, six research centres, two technology stations and one institute.

EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

A culture of research an innovation with 39 rated researchers and 61 postdoctoral fellows; Academics actively participate in various conference panels; Schools successfully hosted international peer-reviewed conferences; 488 research output units; PG headcount enrolment grew to 1 482 (2017: 979).

EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AND LEARNING

Progressed a strategic change in direction, target audience and programme offerings; writing workshops held with academic staff seeking to publish in teaching and learning; Academic staff sponsored at a South African Society for Engineering Education curriculum development workshop, and at four Engineering Education ‘master classes’.

FYS

Fostered close linkages between the FYS and the formal engineering curricula; Students engaged on literacy, mathematics and computer skills.

TUTORSHIP AND MENTORSHIP

Over 450 tutor appointments made to assist in teaching and learning.

FEBE WRITING CENTRE

Two writing workshops held on the Introduction to Engineering Design, and eight for fourthyear students doing final-year research and/or design projects.
