Faculty of Education

The Faculty of Education offers academic programmes (SWC) and APK, while the Centre for Education Rights and Transformation (CERT) is situated in the research village APB. In 2018, the Faculty worked on implementing the strategic plans of centres, departments and chairs.

STUDENT SUPPORT

Extensive training for tutors in LMS and Bb, and general online activity support; Created Tutor Lounge on SWC (for BEd Foundation and Intermediate phase tutors) and the Tutor Zone (for the BEd Senior and FET phases on APK Campus) and WhatsApp group; First-year excursions in BEd Senior and FET Teaching programmes, highlighting social justice issues, with knowledge carried through in priority subjects like Mathematics and English, and with respect to lesson planning for teaching in the Funda UJabule School; Two PGCE ‘Let’s Teach’-themed excursions for issues encountered during work-integrated learning (WIL) in schools.

INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE FOR UG STUDENTS

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Georgia State University (GSU), for fourth-year BEd and PGCE students to observe teaching and learning in Atlanta, USA schools as part fulfilment of the school experience (practicum) requirements, with 19 students spending two weeks in Atlanta.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

Addressed recommendations from the 2016 Faculty review, for greater coherence, coordination and curriculum integration for the ITE Senior and FET programmes; Appointment of Vice-Dean: Teaching and Learning.

TEACHING WITH TECHNOLOGY

Success of 2017-launched online Master in Information and Communication Technology (ICT); Leveraging LMS (Bb) for staff through workshops.

21st CENTURY TEACHING AND LEARNING

Robot competition launched to stimulate critical thinking on AI.
